Monthly Recommendation: City of Girls

Dive into the wild glamour of New York City´s showbiz era in the 40s! When 19-year-old Vivian is kicked out by sophisticated Vassar college, her parents decide to ship her off to the Big Apple, causing her to leave the dull safety of her home and entering an unknown but exciting world. A world full of colour, music, dance, passion and temptations. Her aunt Peg owns a small theatre that is constantly buzzing with show girls, artists and creative talents, while working vigorously on staging one musical act after another. Vivian not only applies her sowing skills to costume design, but also is lured in by the boundary-pushing ecstasy of city life and youthful carelessness, which eventually leads to a scandal with invariable consequences.                                                                                                                                                                                                   Even though the novel takes a few serious turns, it always seems to retain a harmonious, easy-going mood. Elizabeth Gilbert´s witty writing emits a charming and comedic spark, which makes her characters even more lovable. It´s fun, it´s light and a testimony to finding your way, when standing on the brink of teenage innocence and adulthood.                                                                                                                                        Best to read on vacation at the beach, slurping a vibrant theatrically styled drink. Preferably – in Coney Island fashion - a ferris wheel in the background and the scent of corndogs and cotton candy merging with the salty ocean breeze.
