Monthly Recommendation: My Policeman

The scene is 1950s Brighton, a seaside town in the south of England. Young Marion falls in love with Tom, her best friend´s older brother. As they grow older, they spend more and more time together, starting with their first swimming lesson during the crisp hours of the morning. Although Tom the policeman asks Marion the teacher to marry him, he will never be able to return her feelings – his heart belongs to someone else. Patrick works as a curator at the local art museum, his charming and passionate attitude allows Tom to embrace a different part of himself. But the law and social norms are tightly bound to conservative strictness and their unconventional arrangement is likely to face serious complications.

Beth Roberts, award winning writer and former college professor, grants the reader a look into the complex relationship between three people, whose lives will inevitably forever be intertwined and of whom two long to be with the same man. It is impossible not to be gripped by the thought processes and actions of these characters – even if you may not always agree with them. The cover alone makes it a great summer read, with the light blue of the sky and the greenish blue of the water, calling for a sunny afternoon at the pier with a dangerously shaking ice cream cone in one hand and a good book in the other. Moreover, the story will soon leave the black and white pages of the novel to come alive on screen, embodied by the likes of Harry Styles, Emma Corrin and David Dawson.
